History
The Town of Moorefield was chartered in 1777, and is the fourth oldest town in West Virginia. Only Shepherdstown, Romney and Berkeley Springs are older.
The Town was named for Conrad Moore, who owned the land upon which the Town was laid out. It is now a Class III city. Conrad Moore came from a highly respected family and was among the early settlers of the South Branch Valley. He was a
businessman and is said to be the Town's first banker. Prior to 1800 he and other members of his family, for a time, lived in the Old Stone Tavern owned by the C. L. Friddle family and located on Main Street.
When incorporated, the population was less than 100. In 1835 the population was 350; in 1863, 600; in 1920, 620; in 1950, 1405; and in 1977, approximately 2800. The 2000 census had Moorefield with a population of 2,375.

Police Prayer
A POLICE OFFICER'S PRAYER
Lord I ask for courage
Courage to face and Conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me Where others will not go...
I ask for strength
Strength of body to protect others And strength of spirit to lead others...
I ask for dedication
Dedication to my job, to do it well
Dedication to my community
To keep it safe...
Give me Lord, concern for others who trust me
And compassion for those who need me...
And please Lord through it all be at my side...
